Friends on layovers

This year I have tried to do some of the things that I always talk about doing. You know when you say I want to do that but never end up doing it. Maybe it is because I am fourty or because I have had some friends die. I have started to actually try and do some of the things that sound like fun.

My friend Vickie (also an airline pilot with AA) lives on an equine ranch North of Orlando. She picked me up and took me out to see her house. Her husband Kevin is a Air Traffic Controller in Orlando. We spent the day visiting her two dogs, three cats and her horse named Blaze. I watched her do chores like feed and clean the stall. Kevin cooked us a wonderful dinner. I even putted on their putting green in the back yard. The community that they live in is so beautiful. I totally loved it and want to go back and stay for a few days with her.

The next weekend I met my friend Stacey in San Diego. Stacey is a Corporate pilot North of San Diego in the city of Carlsbad. She picked me up at the airport and we went to the West Gate Hotel so I could change. We drove to Carlsbad, California where she lives and works and ate a wonderful mexican food lunch at this place called Norte. The food was wonderful and the view out our window was breathtaking. You could see the ocean and people walking to the beach since it is Memorial Day weekend. The weather was sunny but 68 degrees. She showed me the quaint beach town and I loved it immediately. We went to her apartment which was very nice. We played with her two kitties Angel and Mellow. Mellow is very talkative and loves to be held. Angel is very beautiful and sweet too. We went to Torrey Pines State Park and hiked from up the the hill down to the ocean and back up. It was quite tiring. We then went to my hotel and headed downtown for dinner at a local resturant/bar that reminded me of Cheers. At 9pm she headed back to her apartment and I went to bed. Luckily, I only had one leg home the next day. I had a blast with my friends. The fact is that spending the day doing cool/fun stuff can wear you out for the rest of the trip. When I was young my Mother said that I didn't like to go to sleep because I was afraid that I would miss out on something. I still have that problem today. Next month I have training and I need to study. Some boring trips in the hotel room would be a blessing. Although, just about anything is more fun than pulling out those flight manuals.
