Melanie Visit
Melanie and I went to kindergarden together. We were in first grade together and then we were at Prestonsburg for two years of high school together. We attended Eastern Kentucky University and as it turned out, we lived just down the hall from each other in the dorm. We started to become friends. Our parents had known each other because they both own small businesses in the small town of Allen, Kentucky. At some point we decided to move into an apartment downtown Richmond together. This was an old gray house with four apartments in it. There was a kitchen and a bathroom with two bedrooms. We had some parties there and Mike cooked some great food in that small kitchen. The building was slightly leaning. We knew this because the grease would go to one side of the pan when you were trying to cook. Looking back we both agreed it was kind of terrible. But for some reason we thought it was better than the dorm.
It was a very busy time for us. We didn't really get to spend that much time together. We did go play tennis while in college and I even took her for her first airplane ride. That was special because she was extremely fearful of leaving the ground. I don't remember many specific flights when I was that young. This one I remember quite well. It was in the evening and the air was perfectly still when we departed Richmond airport. She was tense but once we took off she seemed to enjoy the flight and scenery. I didn't want to scare her and I was as smooth and deliberate as I could possibly be. It made me happy to see that she credited me with helping her face her fear of flying. After college Clarissa(my sister) and Melanie lived together in Lexington. I would move on and persue my career goals. She was a bridesmaid in our wedding. We most recently were together at our 20th high school reunion in Kentucky. It was so wonderful to see her. We have been friends on facebook and keeping in touch. I was thrilled when she said she was coming to Texas and wanted to spend the night with us.
I showed her around the house, she met our three kitties. She really liked Hoover. Mike cooked her a tenderloin and scalloped potatoes. I took her flying in our Cessna 172. We watched Toy Story 3 in the home theater. The next morning she went to the Gaylord Texan for her conference. Later that night we met for dinner @ Uncle Julios in Grapevine. It was a fabulous visit.
When I reflect on our friendship, we have always been around each other. We are kind of like sisters because when we get together we just pick up where we left off. It is not strange or awkward. I wonder when we will see each other next? I might have to try to get a long layover in Raliegh on the weekend so we can get out her boat.
