Passion

My sophomore of high school some of our teachers started a tennis team. They recruited me because I played basketball and was athletic. I enjoyed being outside in the elements. I became obsessed with getting all my friends to play tennis so I would have someone to hit with. My sister was the obvious choice since we were forced to be together anyway. Also around this same time of my life I was starting to take flying lessons. Almost every Sunday growing up we would fly somewhere to eat after Church. My Dad received his certified flight instructor when I was fifteen years old, and I decided to get my pilots license.

Fast forward to 2010. I sometimes feel like tennis is a takes up too much time. Flying can be a chore because I fly 13 days a month for American Airlines on the Super 80. But yesterday, I was reminded of the passion that I have for both. My husband and I live on an airpark in Southwest Fort Worth. We own a Cessna 172. It is a four seat aircraft that is slow but easy to fly. On Thursday mornings I play tennis in a league over in Dallas called TCD (Tennis Competitors of Dallas). High Point was over 1.5 hours drive. I am always plotting to fly over with the girls from my area so we can have an adventure. In the past few seasons we have experienced fog, rain and high winds on previous attempts. Yesterday, God gave us the perfect day to mix my two passions. Calm winds, cool weather, and not a cloud in the sky. Three of my teammates were excited to start our all day adventure. They arrived at my house around 9am. Before they arrived I had already flight planned, checked weather, and done the pre flight on the airplane. My husband helped push the airplane out of the hangar and we took some pictures before we departed for McKinney airport.

The air was as smooth as silk and we had cool temperatures so the ladies could enjoy the sightseeing. They kept saying this is so much more fun than driving. We talked to regional approach and they vectored us over the Texas Motor Speedway and over Lake Lewisville on into McKinney. I had arranged for a crew car and brought the GPS to find High Point tennis club. When we arrived at Cutter Aviation they picked us up at the airplane and made us popcorn. There were a few corporate jets taking off to make us feel even more important. We barrowed the car and had no problem getting to the facility. We met up with our team which were all excited that we had flown into the area. We played our matches and lost all lines. Since we were in second place was kind of a surprise. But afterwards we ate accross the street at a awesome resturant called," Taste of the Islands". We headed back to Mckinney airport and jumped into the airplane. It was warmer and a few more bumps. None of the ladies complained. We weren't really talking about our matches because we had a fun trip home ahead. We flew almost the same route home to Bourland Field and parked the airplane in the hangar that is attached to the house. Maggie and Becky rode up front on different legs and actually flew the airplane. Maggie had taken lessons when she was younger and seemed to enjoy the flying part. It was a great day to fly. Not such a great day of tennis. Except for me, I was thrilled to share two of my passions with women who will always share that day that we rode in style to our TCD match in Dallas.
